Who is Rankofa?

I am Rankofa. The name is portmanteau of my birth name Randall and the Akan word/symbol Sankofa, meaning "go back and retrieve," from the Twi language in Ghana.

This spirit runs through my music. I am a Hip Hop artist and proud native of Chicago, ILLanoize. I don't consider myself a rapper. In fact, I view my expression more as poetry over instrumentals. My music will not come with a dance to accompany it, though if you feel moved to boogie to my creations then by all means, boogie! ;-)

Artistically, I view myself as a writer first. I was a "backpacker" in high school and never went anywhere without pen and pad. My early musical influences bolstered this passion. I was shaped by a lot of artists, but Wu-Tang, Scienz of Life, Jedi Mind Tricks, Blackstar, and The Roots were some of the artists I gravitated to the most. I appreciated not only the music, the beats and lyrics, but also the lessons and gems they dropped in the music. I loved the fact that I had to dig deeper than the surface to understand what was being conveyed. I appreciate music that stimulates both the ear AND the mind and soul. And this is the approach I bring to my own music.

While I appreciate a good punchline and wittyisms, if they don't grow the listener in substantial ways then I believe something is lost. I'm not interested in commercialism and consumerism...I won't tell you how much money I have or how much I spent on material goods. I believe the listener doesn't grow from these topics as they're often presented.

And so, this is what distinguishes me from the rest. I approach my craft with transparency and authenticity, conveying my thoughts in an introspective manner that hopefully inspires you, the listener, to your own introspection.

I can attribute much of this to me being a lifelong learner and teacher. I graduated from Stanford University in 2005 and, after working various jobs from non-profit arts to a small startup called Facebook, I went back and earned a Masters in Education. I taught the range of grades from 6-12 in English/Language Arts and Social Studies in Chicago. While this remains a passion, it hasn't stuck as a career.

Now I turn my full attention to being an artist, not having my art be a hobby on the side. Similar to most artists, I have a lot of material in the tuck...and I plan to release nearly all of it. I don't want to leave anything on the table and want to express to the fullest. Thank you for joining me thus far. Ever forward, let's connect and journey together!

Peace and Love,

Rankofa
